A Koni 8705-1341 Front Strut for Ford Transit, an Alternator Core, and an Oil Filter Fitment Problem

Thursday, 9:17 a.m. I was holding a Koni 8705-1341 front strut for a Ford Transit in one hand and a digital caliper in the other. The box came from a new supplier. The label matched the part number. The rod moved smooth. And I almost signed off on it.

I work as a quality and compliance manager for an automotive parts company. I review roughly 200 unique part numbers a year, and in Q1 2024 I rejected about 7% of first deliveries from new vendors. Fitment issues caused most of those rejections—not broken castings, not cosmetic marks. Fitment.

This is not a Koni shock absorber review, and it's not a complaint about Koni. It's a story about why specifications matter more than labels.

An alternator core reminded me why checks matter

The day actually started with alternator cores. A vendor offered us 100 alternator cores at $4 each. They looked clean. They looked polished. After opening ten boxes, six had cracked mounting ears. The vendor said, "Within industry standard." We rejected the lot.

The assumption is that an alternator core must be clean and pretty to be worth money. The reality is that an alternator core just has to be remanufacturable. Grime is fine. Cracks are not. The value is in the housing geometry and the mounting ears, not the polish. We saved maybe $400 on the unit price, then spent more than $700 on return freight and sorting time. Actually, $740 and a full afternoon of a production employee—so the total was worse. I've made that mistake enough times. It never gets cheaper.

At least, that's been my experience with aftermarket parts.

After the core call, I walked to the receiving bay. The Koni 8705-1341 front strut for Ford Transit sat on a pallet with the rest of the order. The struts looked right. The part number looked right. The box even had the correct Ford Transit platform code. Then I looked at the "completeness" lines on our purchase order.

We specified complete strut assemblies with new top mounts. The Koni boxes contained the struts and a thin instruction sheet. No top mounts. The supplier had left them out to cut $6 per side.

"The customer can reuse the old top mount."

On a Ford Transit that has done delivery duty, the top mount is a wear item. The bearing gets rough. The rubber gets stiff. If you install a new Koni strut onto an old top mount, the new Koni shock absorber is not going to feel like a new Koni shock absorber. It's going to feel like an old suspension with one new part.

Koni shock absorbers are well made. I've used them on a couple of work vans, so I'm not knocking the brand. But a good part assembled badly is still a bad outcome.

People think expensive shock absorbers deliver a better ride. Actually, a correctly matched and correctly installed shock absorber delivers a better ride. Price is a result of engineering and testing, not the cause of quality. The causation runs the other way.

We rejected that Koni shipment and asked the supplier to send the missing mounts. They did, at their cost. The part number was never the problem. The assembly spec was.

Black tail light covers and the "universal fit" lie

The same fleet order included a pair of black tail light covers. The listing said "universal fit." I've learned that if a seller says universal fit, the correct response is "for which part?"

We tested them against the actual Ford Transit tail light assembly. The covers overlapped the reverse light by about 4 mm. Tightening the screws would put pressure on the edge of the lens. On a work van that sees heat, cold, and vibration, that pressure is a cracked lens waiting to happen.

I'm not against black tail light covers. If you're building a show van that stays out of the rain, they can look sharp. But if the van is going to carry tools and commute every day, I do not recommend a cover that blocks any part of a light. There are better-designed covers for specific applications. "Universal" is a red flag.

So, M1-110A oil filter fits what vehicle?

That was the exact question from a customer that afternoon. Our sales intern started to type "Ford." I stopped him.

The M1-110A is a spin-on oil filter with a long application list, mostly Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles. But "Ford" isn't a fitment. A 2015 F-150 doesn't use the same filter on every engine. A Transit doesn't necessarily use the same filter as a Fiesta. The M1-110A fits what the catalog says it fits—and the only reason to answer from memory is if you're ready to pay for the mistake.

The better answer: find the VIN or engine code, then check the Mobil 1 application guide. If a customer asks me "M1-110A oil filter fits what vehicle?", I ask for the VIN. That's not being difficult. That's not wanting to send a $12 filter into a $5,000 engine.

What I'd tell a buyer

I recommend the Koni 8705-1341 front strut for Ford Transit owners who want a controlled, well-built replacement. But I recommend it with two conditions: use the correct fasteners and top mounts, and don't expect a new shock to fix old springs or worn bushings. If the rest of the suspension is tired, no shock absorber—Koni or otherwise—will save the ride.

I also recommend treating "alternator core" as a technical description, not a piece of scrap metal. A clean core with a cracked ear is worthless. A dirty core with a straight housing is worth real money. Same lesson as everything else: check the actual condition, not the label.

An oil filter with the wrong anti-drainback valve can starve the top end at cold start. An alternator core with a cracked ear can snap at highway speed. A lamp cover without a proper cutout can cause a ticket. None of these are "premium vs. budget" arguments. They are fitment arguments.

And black tail light covers? They have a place. On a daily driver, I'd pass. On a specific vehicle with a specific cover that's been test-fitted, they're fine. "Universal" is the part number I don't trust.

The M1-110A oil filter question taught me the simplest version of all: fitment is a process, not a wish. Whether it's a front strut for a Ford Transit, an alternator core, a lamp cover, or an oil filter, the stakes are the same. The cost of checking once is much lower than the cost of explaining why I didn't check.
