The Koni Logo Is Just the Start: Why I Test Parts, Not Labels
If you've ever googled the Koni logo to check whether we're a real manufacturer, you're not alone. I would probably do the same thing if I were choosing a supplier. But here's what I tell new buyers: the logo is a starting line, not a test result.
I handle quality follow-up for stamped and CNC-machined orders at Koni, and I've done it for nine years. In that time I've made—and documented—11 significant mistakes totaling roughly $68,000 in wasted budget, rework, and delays. Those mistakes became the pre-production checklist we use today. The common thread was never a dishonest supplier. It was my own shortcut: assuming that a recognizable brand name or catalog number was enough information.

These look like different topics, but the underlying question is always: how do I know this part will work in my application? A label alone does not answer that.
The Koni Brand Is Not a Substitute for a Drawing
People type the words Koni brand into a search engine because they want reassurance that a manufacturer is legitimate. I understand that. There are enough low-quality metal components out there to make brand verification a sensible step. But the Koni brand cannot tell me whether a brake shoe order needs the current revision or a superseded one. It cannot tell me the material grade, the coating, or the tolerance stack-up. Those details live in drawings, material certificates, and inspection reports.
What most people don't realize is that reputable manufacturers also want you to verify. At Koni, when we quote a production component, we back it up with data. The logo connects the shipment to that data. It is not the data itself.
A 4715 Brake Shoe Mistake I Don't Want You to Repeat
In 2021, a customer inquiry came in with a 4715 brake shoe label and a target delivery date. The number pointed to a known brake application, so both sides assumed we were on the same page. I compared the profile to the existing die—or rather, I checked it quickly against our CAD model—and approved the material order. I skipped the final assembly trial because we had made similar shoes before. I thought, 'What are the odds that one detail is different?'
The parts looked fine in our fixture. No, wait—they looked right in our fixture. The customer's assembly line told us they weren't right. Their drums had been machined to the maximum service diameter, and the finished shoe radius didn't agree with the real application. 1,500 pieces went to scrap, roughly $4,700 in material went down the drain, and we ate a two-week delay. The part number wasn't the problem. My failure to ask about the application was the problem.

The same pattern appears with pump components. The label is a clue. The drawing is the answer.
What Fuel Pump Pressure Testing Taught Me
A few months ago, a mechanic friend called me about a car that kept losing power at highway speed. He asked the question that brings a lot of people here: how to test fuel pump pressure. I walked him through the usual steps: connect a gauge to the service port, check the vehicle-specific spec, and compare key-on pressure with idle pressure. The needle looked fine. The car still stumbled.
The missing step was flow under load. A fuel pump can build normal pressure when nothing is demanding fuel. It can fail when the engine actually asks for volume. Testing Isn't Distrust—It's Respect for the Process
I can hear the objection: If I buy from Koni, isn't the brand supposed to make testing unnecessary? I understand why that's attractive. But no manufacturer should expect you to skip verification. The Koni logo means we stand behind our processes, and it means our work is traceable. For automotive work, that can include first article inspection reports, material certs, and documentation that follows the same discipline as IATF 16949 requirements.
But none of those documents are useful if they stay in a file drawer. If a customer sends us a 4715 brake shoe number without the drum condition or assembly print, we will ask. If a customer asks us to quote a Whirlpool water pump component without a revision and material spec, we will ask. I would rather lose an order by asking questions than lose a customer by shipping assumptions.
The metal parts business has changed since I started. What was best practice in 2020 no longer feels sufficient in 2025. Material availability, digital revisions, and customer expectations have all shifted. The fundamentals have not: identify the part, verify the material, check the application, and prove the assembly works.
So go ahead and look for the Koni logo. I want you to know who you're dealing with. But after that, ask for the drawing, the test results, and the application notes.
