Koni Orange Struts vs. Others: Three Scenarios for Your Ride

What's happening: You're doing a full suspension rebuild on a vehicle that's been sitting for years. Maybe you're refreshing an old Honda, or building a custom setup. The old struts are toast. You're not in a hurry—but you want maximum performance.

Best move: Get the full Koni Orange strut assemblies, not just inserts. They'll have new bearings, fresh bushings, and better valving for modern tire setups. They're also often compatible with aftermarket spring perches.

Why not inserts? In this scenario, the old strut housing is probably worn out, too. Using an insert in worn housing is like putting a high-performance fuel pump on a clogged fuel filter—it won't make a difference. You've already spent the time and money on the rest of the build; don't skimp on the strut housing.

Cost difference (circa Q4 2024): Expect to spend roughly 40-50% more for the complete assembly vs. the insert. For a set of four, that's about $200-280 extra, depending on the vehicle. It's often worth it for a project car that won't be touched again for years.


Scenario 3: The “Is this even compatible?” special situation

What's happening: You've got a non-standard vehicle—maybe a modified chassis, a classic car that's been swapped, or something with custom suspension geometry. The Koni Orange catalog says "for Honda S2000" but that's what you have—is it the right one?

Best move: Don't guess. Call Koni's tech line with your VIN and spring dimensions. I've seen people buy a "compatible" insert only to realize the dampening stroke was 30mm off after installation (ugh, again). How to tell which scenario you're in

Here's a quick decision tree I use when triaging a rush order:

  1. Can you afford to wait 7-10 days? If yes, go full Orange assemblies (Scenario 2). If not, move to question 2.
  2. Is the factory housing in good shape? If yes, get inserts (Scenario 1). If it's rusty, damaged, or you can't tell, go full assemblies even if it means waiting—better to wait than install inserts in bad housing (note to self: add that to my list).
  3. Is your vehicle modified or swapped? If yes, you're in Scenario 3. Call Koni's tech line for compatibility before buying anything. Don't just order parts based on the year model.

The vendor who says "this isn't my area—here's Koni's tech number" earned my trust for everything else (and frankly, that's what I'd do).
