KONI Special Active Shock Absorbers and Fleet Parts: A Buyer's FAQ

I handle purchasing for a 40-person fleet operation -- about 22 vehicles, mostly Ford Transit vans and a few cargo trailers. I manage roughly $140,000 a year in parts orders across 11 vendors, and I report to both operations and finance. I'm not an engineer, but after four years in this role I know which corners are safe to cut and which ones cost you overtime and phone calls.

This FAQ is the one I wish I'd had when I took over in 2021. 1. What makes a KONI Special Active rear shock absorber different?

Special Active is KONI's frequency-selective damping system. Instead of a fixed or manually adjustable valve, it uses a bypass valve that reacts to the frequency of the bump. Small, high-frequency road roughness passes through almost normally, while large, low-frequency body motions make the valve firm up.

From the outside, a Special Active unit looks like a regular monotube shock. The reality is internal: precisely machined valve openings, a calibrated spring stack, and a housing that starts as an aluminum extrusion. That manufacturing detail matters. KONI does its own stamping, CNC machining, forging, and extrusion work, so the tolerances are much tighter than what you would get from an outsourced rebuild.

People assume a more expensive shock is a softer shock. Actually, the comfort comes from being soft when the road surface demands it and firm when a loaded van starts to sway. For a rear shock absorber, that means you don't have to choose between a stable load and a bearable empty ride. In my experience, a Transit with Special Active rears tracks noticeably better at highway speed, especially with 1,000 pounds of cargo in the back. I do not count a purchase as done until the part is on the bench and the old unit is off.

An informed buyer asks for the KONI part number and the expected fitment. If a vendor cannot explain what frequency-selective means, the price is the only thing you are negotiating.

2. Is the KONI Special Active front strut worth it for a Ford Transit?

For Transits that carry loads, yes -- if you are replacing worn units anyway. The KONI Special Active front strut is a complete assembly: damper, spring, top mount, and bearing. That makes installation straightforward, but it also means the part number has to match the chassis code. I said 'Transit' once and heard 'whatever standard model fits.' The result was a strut that did not line up with the steering knuckle on a 2022 model. (Note to self: never skip the VIN check again.)

Even if a catalog says 'KONI Special Active front strut Ford Transit applications,' confirm the suspension code before ordering. As of January 2025, KONI's published fitment guide lists separate front strut part numbers for several Ford Transit variants, including different suspension code options. If you are doing a fleet, buy one unit first and test-fit it on the highest-mileage van. The labor for one is about four hours -- or rather, five when you add a stuck brake line and a top nut you did not order.

What I like is the payoff. After a front strut replacement, the Transit feels like it remembers how to absorb expansion joints instead of head-nodding over every one. For our drivers, that means fewer fatigue complaints and better steering response.

3. What is the flywheel energy storage news that matters for fleet buyers?

You might be surprised to see flywheel energy storage in an article about shocks and struts. I was too, until a vendor asked whether our new truck could handle a flywheel hybrid retrofit. Flywheel energy storage stores braking energy in a spinning rotor and releases it as electrical or mechanical power. Recent flywheel energy storage news in 2024 and 2025 is mostly about commercial-vehicle pilots: flywheel hybrid systems for buses and urban delivery trucks, plus grid storage projects using flywheels to regulate frequency.

From a purchasing standpoint, the important part is that flywheel hybrid kits add weight and change the center of gravity. That means your shock, spring, and brake specs may need to be reviewed -- not assumed. (I wish I had asked that question before a vendor quoted us on a retrofit.) If a van has a flywheel KERS unit, don't let a shop confuse it with the engine flywheel; they are entirely different systems, and the service intervals are different too.

4. How do I choose an aftermarket muffler without creating new problems?

An aftermarket muffler can be a great upgrade for sound or weight, but it's not a universal part. The first time I ordered one, I told the supplier 'we need a good muffler for a diesel Transit.' They heard 'the cheapest thing that fits.' We got a loud drone at highway speed and a driver who refused to take that van on long routes. (Ugh.)

Check three things before ordering: construction, sound profile, and legal fitment. A stainless-steel body and welded seams last longer than spun or crimped shells, especially in winter-road climates. Look for a muffler designed for the same engine family and exhaust gas volume. For a diesel Transit, changing the muffler can also change exhaust backpressure and engine sound, so don't buy purely on photos.

Emissions rules matter too. An aftermarket muffler may be legal on a 2015 gasoline van but not on a 2024 light-duty diesel. As of 2025, the legal status varies by state -- a national distributor should be able to give you a compliance statement, not a shrug.

5. What is the best wheel bearing grease for trailers?

For most trailer fleets, a high-quality NLGI #2 lithium-complex grease is my default. Look for a drop point above 350 degrees Fahrenheit (ASTM D2265) and a solid water-resistance rating. If you are packing bearings by hand, that spec is more important than the color of the grease.

In my first year, I made the classic rookie mistake: I ordered a cheap multipurpose grease because it was in stock, and I skipped the spec sheet. A trailer hub got water intrusion after a summer storm, and the bearing went out on a long highway trip around 10 p.m. That was the kind of lesson that sticks.

Today we choose one approved grease and stick with it. Mixing grease types on the same hub can change consistency and increase wear. If the trailer is used for high-heat or high-load service, a synthetic or moly-fortified grease can be worth it, but don't pay extra for a 'racing' formula unless the maintenance plan actually requires it. The best wheel bearing grease for trailers is the one your service team will actually keep in stock and reapply on schedule. (Should mention: we now keep MSDS/TDS sheets for every lubricant we use.)
